From age 65: How often should you shower (and why excessive showering can be harmful to your health)?

Bathing from age 65: Why less is more for healthy skin

Bathing aids for seniors

As we age, our daily routines often need to be re-evaluated. One of the most common – and surprisingly effective – habits to reconsider is showering. While feeling clean is important, for people over 65,  showering less frequently can  actually be a key component of healthy skin.

This is not about a lack of hygiene, but about adapting to the changing needs of the body.

Why skin changes after age 65

As we age, skin naturally changes and becomes more sensitive. Important supporting elements diminish:

  •  Collagen   and elastin: These proteins, which keep the skin firm and supple, decrease.

  • Sebum production:   The natural skin oils that form a protective barrier decrease.

Imagine your skin's protective barrier like a knight's shield. Over time, this shield becomes thinner and more vulnerable. External irritants – such as hot water and harsh soaps – can then penetrate more easily, leading to dryness, skin damage, and discomfort.
